Rey Mysterio is apparently cooking up something pretty damn big for Survivor Series, and it could turn one of WWE’s oldest match traditions into an international bout. The WWE Hall of Famer says he’s already been talking with Adam Pearce and Nick Aldis about making it happen.
During his appearance on Stephanie McMahon’s What’s Your Story? podcast, Mysterio revealed plans for a classic five-on-five Survivor Series match featuring Team USA against Team Mexico. Rey tied the idea to the growing influence of lucha libre and WWE’s involvement with AAA.
“This is a very important announcement. The overall vision of AAA and where it was compared to where it is now shows that lucha has made a big impact on wrestling worldwide. I had a few words with Adam Pearce and Nick Aldis, and we’re going to put together something very special — a classic five-on-five Survivor Series match at this year’s Survivor Series, where it will be Team USA versus Team Mexico.”
Naturally, Stephanie immediately wanted to know whether Rey planned on throwing himself into the match. He wasn’t giving that part away just yet, though, and made it clear they’re still figuring out exactly what this thing will look like.
“Well, I won’t speak out right now as it is, because we’re still putting the pieces together.”
Then came the other obvious question: if Rey does wrestle, which team gets him? Considering his Mexican heritage and everything he has done for lucha libre in the United States, Team Mexico would certainly make sense, but Mysterio once again stopped short of confirming anything.
“Well, I mean, lucha has been my strong point. So, I’m very excited because I was able to break some of those barriers, uh, you know, coming into ECW, then WCW, then eventually WWE. And to see where lucha is at now is like, wow. I never thought it would take such a big impact like it has.”
Rey has certainly watched that influence grow well beyond his own career. While discussing the doors that have opened for Mexican wrestlers, he pointed directly to several names now getting major exposure in WWE.
“Like you were saying, the barriers that were broken, the path that I took, and the gateway I’ve opened up for many other wrestlers — it’s good to see that happening now. Now we have a Penta, we have a Rey Fénix, we have a Dragon Lee. We even have El Grande Americano.”
The fun part now is figuring out who actually gets those ten spots. Rey isn’t even confirming his own involvement yet, so WWE has plenty of room to play around with both teams before Survivor Series — especially with the growing pool of lucha talent available to make Team Mexico one hell of a lineup.
Who would you put on Team USA and Team Mexico for Rey Mysterio’s five-on-five Survivor Series match? Let us know what you think in the comments.
