Backstage fights have become a regular topic of conversation in wrestling over the past few years, and Enzo Amore thinks there’s a big difference between how WWE and AEW handle them. While reflecting on one of his own backstage altercations, Enzo said fights happen in every locker room—but when he was in WWE, they stayed there.
Speaking with Maven, Enzo reacted to Heath Slater recently recalling a fight between him and Curtis Axel on a WWE bus. According to Slater, the whole thing started after Axel threw Enzo’s speaker down the aisle before trying to apologize, only for Enzo to think a fight was coming. The two ended up throwing punches before other wrestlers stepped in to separate them.
Enzo admitted he’d never heard anyone publicly tell that story before, but said Slater was being fair. He didn’t want to get into his own version of events, though he acknowledged that disagreements and even fights were simply part of life in a wrestling locker room.
“That’s funny, man. And I never heard anybody talk about that incident ever. I didn’t know it was out there. I’m not a dick. I’m just a really good guy. But you take my kindness for weakness, I immediately throw hands. So I never spoke about this and I never really will. Heath was fair enough. Heath was right, though. In the locker room, it happens. It happens. Not everybody gets along. It’s just part of the business.”
Enzo then said that wasn’t the only backstage confrontation he had during his WWE run. According to him, there were other incidents that fans never found out about because people kept those situations inside the locker room instead of letting them become headlines.
“Hey, bro, I had to fight. Look it, I had to fight for everything I got. I didn’t get where the f*** I got being some pushover. When s*** hit the fan backstage or when I had to go walk in a room and talk to Vince McMahon one-on-one or I had to go talk to Hunter one-on-one, those conversations stayed there.
And with the boys, the same s***. If I fist fought another guy in the locker room, you probably never heard of it because I probably f***ing won. What happens in the WWE locker room as far as fist fights never left.”
That’s when Enzo turned his attention to AEW. Without naming any specific incidents, he took a shot at the company for how often backstage issues seem to find their way online.
“Yeah. F****** AEW, for all the f****** ass fighting that they do over there and letting it leak and s***. It wasn’t that way when I was there.”
Enzo’s point wasn’t that fights never happened in WWE—it was that they rarely became public stories. Whether fans agree with that comparison or not, he clearly believes keeping locker room business behind closed doors was a big part of the culture during his time with the company.
