Malakai Black’s status with AEW continues to spark debate following his recent absence from AEW programming and an announcement of a rare independent appearance.

Now, a new report from Fightful Select adds fuel to the fire, claiming, “Malakai Black is not expected back in AEW.”

This update comes on the heels of Black being announced for Coastal Championship Wrestling’s (CCW) Havoc & Haze 9 event on January 11, 2025, where he’s set to face Orion. While CCW referred to him as “an All Elite Wrestling star,” the Fightful Select report seems to indicate that Black’s AEW chapter may already be closed.

Earlier today, Wrestling Observer Radio’s Dave Meltzer also noted backstage rumors that Black had already parted ways with AEW. “The rumor backstage is that he’s gone. I did not get that confirmed, but I will say this, I did not get it denied. It was basically ignored,” Meltzer stated.

AEW’s contract status for Black has remained murky. Tony Khan previously confirmed that Black was signed through 2027, with option years after 2025. However, neither Black nor AEW has publicly addressed the swirling rumors, leaving fans in limbo.

Malakai Black’s match at Havoc & Haze 9 could signify a new phase in his career, whether it’s a temporary departure from the national spotlight or a prelude to his next move. With Fightful’s latest report, speculation is bound to grow about what’s next for the House of Black leader.
