NJPW Wrestle Dynasty was held on January 5th and it was truly a night of memorable moments and solid matches and it featured quite a few AEW talent. However, many fans found it off why AEW didn’t really promote the show and now the reason for that has been revealed.

While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer reported that AEW was not able to promote the Wrestle Dynasty pay-per-view on their TV shows because of their deal with WBD’s MAX streaming platform, as the event is streaming on a different platform, namely NJPW World.

“AEW couldn’t promote Wrestle Dynasty pay-per-view on their TV shows for the most part because of the MAX deal and the fact it’s on a different streaming service.”

Wrestle Dynasty featured Kenny Omega’s triumphant in-ring return as he defeated Gabe Kidd, Mercedes Mone defeated Mina Shirakawa to become the new RPW Undisputed British Women’s Champion, The Young Bucks winning the IWGP Tag Team Titles, among other things. Therefore, AEW’s presence on the card was evident but fans are still disappointed AEW simply wasn’t able to promote the show at all on their programming.

Tony Khan’s company earns quite a lot of money on a weekly basis because of their multi-year media rights deal with Warner Bros. Discovery, so it’s not hard to see why AEW had to adhere to Warner Bros’ rules in the end. Regardless, while AEW’s presence was felt, the restrictions on advertising the event led to some frustration within the fanbase.

What do you think about AEW’s inability to promote Wrestle Dynasty? Do you think the MAX deal hurt the visibility of the event? Please share your thoughts and feedback in the comment section below.
