CM Punk has been part of the wrestling business for well over two decades and competed in various companies over the years. However, it’s inevitable that he will hang up his pro wrestling boots one day and has now revealed his plans once he retires from in-ring competition.
While speaking to the Nightcap podcast, CM Punk was asked about his retirement plans once his in-ring career is over. Punk mentioned that he sees a way for him to stay involved in the business behind the scenes, helping out. He believes that if one is truly dedicated, then one is already doing that, just like how veterans in sports teams help guide new players and move things forward.
“No, I—I do think there’s an avenue for me to stay in the business behind the scenes, helping out. But honestly, if you’re worth your weight, you’re already doing that now. On a football team, a hockey team, or a baseball team, there are always veterans who help bring in the new talent—the young guys—and help move things along.”
Punk explained that he views a career in three stages: the first is when you start and learn, the second is when you earn, and the third is when you give back. He looks forward to this third phase, where he can give back to the business that has given him so much.
“To me, there are three parts to a career. First, when you start, that’s when you learn. The middle part is when you earn. And the third part is return—that’s when you give back. I definitely look forward to that third act, giving back to the business that’s given me so much.”
At the moment, The Second City Saint is more focused on his match against Seth Rollins on the January 6 debut of Monday Night RAW on Netflix. Nonetheless, Punk has already been helping out younger talent in NXT and even Shawn Michaels feels Punk can be his successor in NXT as well. Therefore, we’ll have to wait and see when Punk will retire from in-ring competition and begin a backstage role in WWE.
