WWE Hall of Famer D-Von Dudley has shed light on a deeply personal and troubling experience from his early days in WWE.
Speaking on Maven’s YouTube channel, the legendary tag team wrestler revealed he encountered racism almost immediately after joining the company in 1999, recounting an incident that left him “p*ssed” and shocked.
“They told Bubba, ‘You’re a good guy, I like you a lot. But D-Von, I don’t know… He’s black,’” D-Von revealed, referencing an unnamed individual within WWE. Understandably furious, D-Von admitted that his first instinct was to retaliate. “I remember balling up my fists and Bubba saw it and grabbed me,” he recalled. The level-headed reaction from his tag team partner likely saved their budding WWE careers. “Had I reacted, we probably wouldn’t be sitting here talking now,” D-Von admitted.
The racism wasn’t confined to just a single comment. D-Von went on to reveal that he faced discrimination from certain senior-level people within the company’s office, although he clarified that Vince McMahon, John Laurinaitis, and Michael Hayes were not among those individuals.
D-Von’s revelation comes amidst years of criticism directed at WWE for racial stereotypes in storylines and backstage culture. Despite facing such adversity, D-Von rose above it all to become one-half of one of the most iconic tag teams in wrestling history. Alongside Bubba Ray, the Dudley Boyz captured numerous championships, cementing their legacy as Hall of Famers in both WWE and TNA Wrestling.
D-Von Dudley’s story is a raw reminder of the struggles he had to overcome, not just in the ring but behind the scenes. The fact that he kept his cool and stayed focused on his career speaks volumes about his character. Love him or hate him, you’ve got to respect the man for pushing through and making history as one of the best tag team wrestlers ever.
