R-Truth is known as one of the funniest Superstars in WWE history, and his ongoing joke about John Cena being his “Childhood Hero” always gets fans laughing. In fact, Truth has finally shared the story of how the idea came about.

While speaking to Chris Van Vliet, R-Truth explained how his “Childhood Hero” gimmick with John Cena started. It came from a funny idea written into a segment, and Cena thought it was great. Before doing it, R-Truth asked Cena if it was okay to dress up like him and act like him. Cena laughed and gave him permission, telling him to go for it.

“I broke him too with that one. That was good, man. And they’re still running with it. I love it man. I’m not gonna bust nobody’s bubble. He is my childhood hero.

No, they actually had it written out. Like, “Oh this is fun, funny.” I did text John about dressing up like him and I got the “Hahahah” laugh, you know the emoji. I think it’s great, run with it. So I become his childhood hero with his blessing.”

R-Truth fully embraced the gimmick, even down to wearing Cena’s signature shorts, as part of his tribute. He talked about wanting to walk, talk, and be like Cena, which Cena supported without any issue whatsoever, telling Truth to make the character his own.

“Yes, I asked for his blessing for everything, even wearing his shorts. He said, “Truth, you don’t have to ask me to wear shorts to the ring.” I said, “Man I wanna be you. I wanna own everything you do, walk talk, I wanna be you.” He said, “Run with it.”

R-Truth’s comedic genius and John Cena’s willingness to play along have made this gimmick helped make the whole thing absolute gold, as it remains one of WWE’s most beloved running gags. Considering the fact that Cena will begin his retirement tour next week, fans can expect to see Truth and The Leader of Cenation have more interactions again on television.
