WWE has a long history of hosting events that celebrate special themes or honor specific groups of fans. One of these events is Tribute to the Troops, but its future became uncertain after WWE skipped it this year. However, it appears the event might be brought back in the future.
During a recent Q&A on Backstage Pass, WrestleVotes mentioned that WWE is thinking about bringing Tribute to the Troops back to its original format. This could mean holding the show at U.S. military bases or possibly overseas, but nothing has been decided yet.
The event didn’t happen this year, likely because it wasn’t properly planned. However, there’s a good chance it will return next year in a military setting, similar to how it used to be before moving to regular arenas.
“Yeah, I tried to ask around about what happened to Tribute to the Troops. I did have a source say that it was likely that they want to get back to the roots of it. I don’t know if that means going overseas and stuff, but I think they wanted to get back into maybe the bases here in America and things like that, and they just didn’t have the organization to do that this time around. So I wouldn’t be surprised if it came back next year in more of a traditional military-based type of environment that we were used to before they changed to just the standard arena show.”
Dave Meltzer previously mentioned that Tribute to the Troops was not held this year due to WWE being busy with other priorities. He explained that the event was closely tied to Vince McMahon, and without him in charge, it has quietly been discontinued without any official announcement. This was the first year in which no Tribute to the Troops events or content were produced.
“No more. It’s done. Obviously, the year being up, I think in the last month people were kind of asking when they’re taping it. It just was not being taped. They had too many other things going on. I don’t know if it’s done for good, but this is the first year that they haven’t done anything with that. I think that in 2019 I believe they didn’t do a television show, but they still did events and they still taped stuff. But this year, nothing. It was a Vince McMahon thing, and it’s not Vince’s company anymore. It’s not something that you’re going to advertise that we’re not doing this anymore, but it quietly went away this year.”
With talks of bringing Tribute to the Troops back, it’s apparent that WWE wants to reconnect with the military community in a more traditional way. This could involve returning to the military base shows that fans have loved for years. We’ll have to wait and see how WWE plans to bring this idea to life again.
