WWE Hall of Famer Paul Heyman’s time running ECW is legendary, but not without controversy. Known for his innovative approach to wrestling, Heyman’s business practices during ECW’s heyday left some of his talent unpaid—a fact that former ECW World Heavyweight Champion Jerry Lynn isn’t shy about addressing.
During a recent interview on Wrestling Shoot Interviews, Lynn opened up about the money Heyman still owes him from their time working together in the hardcore promotion. “It’s quite a bit,” Lynn admitted. “But, you know, I’ll never see it.”
Lynn reflected on the years following ECW’s closure, calling it his “apology tour” where he aired his frustrations about the financial situation. He specifically recalled one instance when WWE came to Nashville, Tennessee, where he lives, and he stopped by to visit Brock Lesnar. Lynn was surprised to run into Heyman, who was managing Lesnar at the time, leading to a direct conversation about the unpaid debt.
“I saw Paulie, and I told him, ‘I buried you in a lot of promos,’” Lynn shared. “I said I wasn’t happy, you know, being screwed out of a lot of money. He said, ‘I don’t blame you.’”
Despite the unresolved financial matter, Lynn emphasized that he holds no grudges toward Heyman. “I told him I wished we had more time to work together,” Lynn added, praising Heyman’s “incredible mind” for the wrestling business. Over the years, the two have reconciled, even if the money remains unpaid.
It’s a story as old as wrestling itself—big dreams, bigger risks, and sometimes, unpaid debts. While Paul Heyman’s genius shaped the hardcore legacy of ECW, Jerry Lynn’s candid words are a stark reminder of the cost that often comes with it. Will Heyman ever pay up? Probably not, but the wrestling world will never forget the sacrifices made by talents like Lynn who helped build that legacy.
