Penta El Zero Miedo and Rey Fenix have been a hot topic lately, with fans speculating they would leave AEW for WWE. While Penta is confirmed to be joining WWE, Fenix is still with AEW for now. In fact, the reason behind the backstage issues with The Lucha Brothers has now been revealed.
According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the backstage situation with Penta and Rey Fenix arose because both wrestlers felt they had stagnated in AEW and knew WWE was interested in them.
It was noted that Tony Khan tried to keep them by offering more money, but by that point, the Lucha Brothers had already decided to leave. When AEW management approached them about renewing their contracts, Penta and Fenix told them to talk to their agent instead. Realizing they were likely leaving, AEW chose not to use them on television.
Rey Fenix has fans questioning his future in AEW after he abruptly deleted tweets accusing the company of “inhumane treatment” and neglecting his medical needs and he is even trying to get fired from the company, since AEW had added injury time to Fenix’s contract.
As for Penta, WWE has been airing vignettes on Monday Night RAW which more or less confirms he will be making his debut on the company during the January 6th, 2025 episode of RAW. Regardless, fans have accepted the fact that Fenix will join his brother in WWE and the duo may never return to AEW and perhaps that’s for the best.
