CM Punk is known for a lot of things, and his famous entrance music is certainly one of them. Living Colour’s Cult of Personality has stuck with Punk for years, even traveling to AEW and back with the Second City Savior. Obviously, that song means a lot to Punk.
Cult of Personality has maintained constant streams, and CM Punk could own a lot of credit for that success. As of this writing, the song has 12,975,917 streams on Spotify alone.
While speaking to the Humble Roses Podcast, Living Colour’s Corey Glover opened up about a bit of history behind the song. He also discussed how much it means to CM Punk. When asked about WWE wanting to re-record their own version of the song and shut Living Colour out, something that Punk allegedly fought against, Glover went into a bit more detail.
“We had a couple versions of the song already recorded for him, but if you know the history of CM Punk, he came from backyard wrestling, and he was using the song back then in backyard. So, when he went to WWE they were like ‘we can give you a mock-up of your theme song,’ and he’s like ‘no I’m not doing it, I’m not using anything but this song, and for no reason other than the fact, sort of, and emotional significance to him.”
“When he was a kid living just outside of Chicago, he was in little league and his little league coach, as progressive as they might have been, would play Cult of Personality when the team came out onto the field. And it gave him a good feeling, cause you know, CM Punk’s whole history with his family wasn’t always great and this was a happy moment for him.”
Living Colour also recently remastered their classic Cult of Personality song, and CM Punk took notice, but he wasn’t the only one. That 2023 version of the song currently has 163,491,267 listens on Spotify, so it has even eclipsed the original.
CM Punk means a lot to Living Colour too. When Punk went through his recent injury hiatus, the band sent him a get well soon post.
We will have to see how many big events have Living Colour’s Cult of Personality playing, but WrestleMania 41 may be a great time to hear it in a marquee match in Las Vegas. Only time will tell if Living Colour gets a Mania invitation to play the song live.
