WWE’s impending transition to Netflix will bring many changes to the product as the product will be on a global scale that has never been seen before. Ahead of WWE’s Netflix transition next year, it has now been revealed that WWE content will also begin streaming on Netflix in India next year, which might come as a shock to many in the country.
According to Business Standard, WWE will move its media rights in India from Sony Pictures Networks India to Netflix India. This change is part of the 10-year global deal worth $5 billion between TKO and Netflix.
It was reported that the switch will happen after March 2025, when WWE’s current contract with Sony Pictures Networks India ends. Sony Pictures Networks India had renewed its rights in 2020 for $180-210 million over five years but didn’t meet expectations for digital performance. Netflix wants to make WWE content exclusive in India as part of its worldwide strategy.
This deal will also be Netflix India’s first step into sports entertainment. While Netflix has worked with live sports globally, like the NFL, it hasn’t entered the Indian sports market before. WWE content will be available on Netflix in 2025 and there is a lot of anticipation but apprehension behind the move.
WWE shows have aired on Ten Sports in India since 2002, so fans in India have gotten used to watching all weekly shows and Premium Live Events on the channel. Sony Pictures Networks India bought Ten Sports in 2016 and renamed it Sony Ten, continuing a partnership with WWE for over 20 years.
With Netflix entering India’s sports entertainment market, WWE content will be easier to access for fans who prefer streaming platforms. However, it’s unclear how this move will affect viewership, fan engagement, and the overall WWE experience in India.
