Mr. Kennedy was once seen as a future star in WWE, with many people believing he would become one of the biggest names in the company. While his WWE career didn’t go as he planned, Kennedy has now revealed how Paul Heyman helped him during his time in TNA Wrestling.
While speaking to Rewind Recap Relive, Mr. Kennedy explained that Paul Heyman was instrumental in helping him choose the name “Kennedy” after Vince McMahon asked him to change it. They brainstormed together for about an hour before settling on the name.
“I am a Paul Heyman guy for sure, through and through, after that. Yeah, that’s insane. Definitely believed in you, and then, you know, like he continued to sort of help me out. He helped me come up with the Kennedy name because Vince told me he wanted me to change my name. So we kind of brainstormed for about an hour and came up with Kennedy.”
Kennedy also talked about his time in TNA, where Eric Bischoff recognized his frustration with the scripted nature of WWE’s programming. Kennedy noted that everything was written word-for-word in WWE, and if a single word was missed, Vince McMahon would point it out. In TNA, Bischoff offered a different approach, saying he would provide Kennedy with bullet points and a broad outline, rather than a full script.
During this time, Kennedy often reached out to Paul Heyman for guidance. Kennedy stated that he would share the bullet points he was given, and Heyman would help him make sense of the material, sometimes rewriting it for him. Kennedy noted that in a way, Heyman was like a writer for TNA, as he helped Kennedy craft his promos and storylines.
“And then when I left WWE, I remember going to TNA, and Eric Bischoff was like, ‘Look, I know that you were sort of frustrated with the way you were managed at WWE.’ And he’s like, ‘Everything is scripted at the time, you know, like verbatim. If you missed a word, Vince was standing there going, “Why’d you miss this?”
And so Eric was like, ‘Look, we’re going to write something for you. It’s just bullet points. It’s just a broad overview of where we need you to go.’ And so I would oftentimes call Paul Heyman and say, ‘Hey, here’s what they have for me. Can you help me make sense of this?’ And he would fire me off an email and rewrite what they had written for me. So he, in a sense, was writing for TNA at one time.”
Mr. Kennedy achieved significant success during his time in TNA Wrestling before his release in 2016. He also addressed rumors surrounding John Cena and Randy Orton’s alleged involvement in his WWE release. Despite the setbacks, Kennedy remains one of WWE’s biggest “What Ifs,” and many fans are still hoping to see him return to WWE at some point in the future.
