Reason Why WWE Brought Back Million Dollar Championship in 2021 Revealed

Trevor Lee and LA Knight were engaged in a heated feud over the Million Dollar Championship back in 2021. What’s special was the fact that the championship was brought back for the first time in a decade and now the reason behind WWE bringing it back has been revealed.

While speaking to Bill Pritchard, Trevor Lee reflected on his unexpected run with the Million Dollar Championship. He explained that there were no original plans for him to become the champion. Instead, the decision stemmed from his successful vignettes with Ted DiBiase.

Lee recalled that they filmed several vignettes in one day, including scenes of watch shopping and buying a house with DiBiase. The positive reception to the segments led WWE to expand the storyline and eventually bring back the Million Dollar Title. According to Lee, it all developed week by week as the angle gained popularity.

“It was definitely like a happenstance. When they said, ‘We are going to have Ted come in,’ there was no talks of it being, for it to ultimately bring in the Million Dollar Championship. But we were very fortunate that with WWE’s resources, we got to do a lot of very cool vignettes. We had one day for taping and we did three different vignettes in that day. And it was the watch shopping with Ted and buying a house with Ted.

And then there was one more we did that day as well. But I can’t exactly remember which one it was. But it was just supposed to be those eventually. And then, once I got back to the production and they edited it all up and everything they were like, ‘Man! This is some good stuff. Maybe we will get a little bit more out of this.’ And then once they started thinking about getting more out of it, then it was like, ‘Let’s just bring back the Million Dollar Title. Since it was becoming so big.’ It was just kind of like a week-by-week thing.”

What began as a simple storyline quickly evolved into a fan-favorite feud, with the reintroduction of the Million Dollar Championship more prestige to their storyline. Week by week, the angle gained momentum and became one of the standout highlights of NXT in 2021. Trevor Lee ultimately won the Championship and became its final holder before the title was officially retired and fans will always remember his feud with Knight for good reason.
