Kurt Angle didn’t hold back when discussing his time as the General Manager of Monday Night Raw during an interview with Inside the Ropes. Reflecting on his 2017 return to WWE in the GM role, the Olympic gold medalist revealed that the experience wasn’t as enjoyable as fans—or he—might have hoped.
Angle, known for his sharp wit and comedic timing during his prime, pointed to the WWE writing team as a major reason for his lackluster tenure in the role. “I didn’t have as much fun playing the GM as I did when I was involved in the company the prior years,” Angle admitted. “I think it had to do with the writers. They weren’t really in tune with my character.”
The WWE Hall of Famer compared his time as GM to his earlier years in the company when head writer Brian Gewirtz penned material that allowed Angle’s personality to shine. “Unfortunately, they weren’t able to write some great material like Brian Gewirtz wrote for me back in 2004, 2005, and 2006,” he said. “I had to play a more serious GM, and I didn’t really enjoy it.”
Angle also reflected on the rare moments when his comedic side emerged, noting how much he missed connecting with fans in that way. “There were a couple of times I said some funny stuff, and people were like, ‘That’s the old Kurt Angle.’ I wanted that so badly, but they just weren’t writing it for me.”
The frustration didn’t end there. Angle also revealed a moment that left him feeling humiliated, recalling a specific incident involving Triple H. “When Triple H punched me—you know who told me to do that? Vince McMahon made an ass out of me too,” Angle shared, alluding to a segment that has since become a popular meme among fans.
Despite the challenges, Angle’s tenure as GM still left fans with some memorable moments. However, his candid remarks highlight what could have been if the creative team had embraced the full scope of his talent.
