Matt Cardona’s post-WWE career has been on fire, with the self-proclaimed “Indy God” making waves in promotions like GCW and ROH.

Cardona is gearing up for two massive matches in December and January: a showdown with Chris Jericho for the ROH World Heavyweight Title at Final Battle on December 20th, followed by a marquee bout at The People vs. GCW on January 19th, both at the Hammerstein Ballroom.

However, it seems one major GCW idea featuring Cardona and his wife, WWE Superstar Chelsea Green, has been shut down. According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, “There also was an idea at one point for Cardona & Chelsea Green vs. Joey Janela & Megan Bayne on that show, but WWE wouldn’t go for it.”

While the exact reason for WWE’s refusal remains unclear, it has sparked curiosity, especially since WWE stars have previously competed at GCW Bloodsport events.

This development comes amid AEW’s recent decision to pull Ricky Starks from GCW shows, including a match against Cardona, after Effy made controversial comments about AEW and Tony Khan’s father, Shad Khan. Despite these setbacks, Cardona has still made waves on AEW programming in the lead-up to his match with Jericho.

GCW’s January 19th event still boasts an exciting lineup, featuring matches like Masato Tanaka vs. Joey Janela, a GCW Ultraviolent Title DLC match, and a GCW World Title bout. While the proposed tag match involving Cardona and Green won’t happen, fans can still expect a chaotic night at Hammerstein.

Matt Cardona and Chelsea Green have proven they can make waves anywhere, but WWE’s reported decision to block this GCW match raises plenty of eyebrows. Whether it’s a matter of control or a deeper issue, fans are left wondering what could have been. One thing’s for sure—Cardona isn’t slowing down, and his indie domination continues to keep everyone talking. Stay tuned, because this story might not be over yet.
