WWE Hall of Famer Kane is known for his years as a top star in the company and was accustomed to life on the road, traveling from town to town. However, a former WWE star has now shared a story about a nightmare experience at a hotel that left The Big Red Machine genuinely infuriated.
While speaking on The Stevie Richards Show, Stevie Richards shared a story about the time Kane got really angry with him over a terrible hotel choice where Richards felt Kane wanted to end his life.
Stevie Richards noted that back in the day, before GPS or Google Maps, Richards was temporarily in charge of booking hotels for the group, which included Kane, Charles Robinson, and Rosie.
“Do you want me to tell the story about how I used to book the rooms for myself, Charles Robinson, Rosie, and Glenn Jacobs? Glen wanted to legitimately end my life one night because of a hotel I booked.
So, we’re booking hotels, and it’s already tense between Kane and myself—which, by the way, his name is Glenn Jacobs. This was before GPS was really a thing. We didn’t have Google Maps, and he was our ‘gym positioning system,’ or GL for short, because he could always find gyms. That was his job. Either Charles, Rosie, or I was in charge of rental cars, and I—at least temporarily—was in charge of hotels.“
One night, while driving somewhere out west, they were listening to Coast to Coast AM as usual. Richards saw a hotel with a sign advertising rooms for $19.99 a night. Thinking it was a great deal, he suggested they stay there since they were arriving late and wouldn’t be staying long.
Kane wasn’t happy and warned Richards that if it was another bad hotel, he was leaving. Richards didn’t take him seriously and booked the room anyway. When they arrived, the place already seemed sketchy. The doors were old metal ones, and the check-in counter had bulletproof glass. Richards brushed it off, saying they were just being cautious.
“I forget what town it was, but it was somewhere out west. I remember we were listening to Coast to Coast AM, as we always did late at night on long drives. We passed a hotel, and I said, ‘This looks like a good hotel.’ The sign outside said, ‘$19.99 a night.’ Twenty bucks a night! Even back then, when Motel 6 was $30 and Red Roof Inn was $40, twenty bucks was insanely cheap. I thought, ‘This is fine. We’re getting in late. We’re not going to be here long.’
Glenn immediately said, ‘If you pick one more dingy hotel like this, I swear I’m leaving. You can stay here by yourself!’ He even added, ‘If this place is so great, maybe I’ll just live here.’ Of course, I didn’t take him seriously.“
As soon as they opened the room door, it was clear the place wasn’t great. The door was barely on its hinges, and the lock looked like it had been kicked in. Richards still insisted it was fine. Kane went to hang his wrestling tights in the closet, while Richards washed his face in the bathroom.
Suddenly, Kane yelled for Richards to come over and when Richards rushed to see what was wrong, Kane stood by the closet door, clearly angry. He opened the door to reveal a giant hole in the wall leading to the next room. To make it worse, someone had spray-painted a heart around the hole.
“We got the room, and everything seemed standard—an old-school setup where you drive up to the door. It had metal doors and bulletproof glass at the check-in. I told Glenn, ‘They’re just being cautious. It’s fine.’
We opened the door to the room, and right away, the door wasn’t fully on its hinges. The bolt looked like someone had kicked it in before, but it was still locking, so I said, ‘This is fine.’ Glenn went to hang his tights up in the closet while I washed my face in the bathroom. Suddenly, Glenn screamed, ‘Stevie, get the F in here now!’
I ran out and made the U-turn to the closet. Glenn was standing there, holding the doorknob to the closet door. I asked, ‘What’s wrong?’ He just glared at me and said, ‘What did I say in the car?’
I asked again, ‘What’s wrong?’ Glenn opened the closet door, and there it was: someone had punched a hole straight through the wall into the next room. But the kicker? They had spray-painted a heart around the hole.”
Richards tried to lighten the mood and joked about the heart, but Kane didn’t find it funny. He was furious and looked ready to explode. He grabbed Richards by the shirt and demanded they leave immediately. Kane made it clear they were getting their money back and finding a better hotel. Richards noted that they got their $20 back and stayed somewhere decent that night. After that, Richards was no longer in charge of booking hotels.
“I thought by pointing that out, it would make everything better. What went wrong was me saying that.
Glenn did not think that was funny. He was furious. He looked like he was about to blow his top. He wants me no longer alive He grabbed me by the shirt, glared at the bulletproof glass at the front desk, and growled, ‘We’re staying at another hotel tonight. You can stay here if you want, but we’re leaving.’
We got our twenty bucks back, and Glenn made it very clear I was never booking hotels again. We ended up staying in a regular hotel that night. Lesson learned.”
Stevie Richards certainly has a lot of history with Kane as he even claimed that getting chokeslammed by Kane saved his job in WWE. Regardless, Richards learned his lesson and made sure he never booked any cheap hotels again and that’s all that matters to him in the end.
