Professional wrestlers being involved in video games is nothing new, as this has been happening for decades. Therefore, it’s not surprising that RVD recently revealed he had a voice acting role in the Saints Row games as well.
While speaking on the 1 of a Kind podcast, RVD revealed that he had a voice acting role in the Saints Row video game series and revealed that Jesse Ventura was a big inspiration for his performance.
RVD explained that while he couldn’t remember exactly how the voice sounded after all these years, he had modeled it on how Jesse Ventura sounded while commentating, adding a bit more force to the delivery. The vibe he aimed for was chaotic and high-energy, reflecting mayhem and explosions everywhere. Although Jesse was an influence, RVD clarified that he wasn’t trying to mimic him directly.
“You know, when I did the video game Saints Row—we were just talking about this the other day—Jesse was a big inspiration for the voice I did. Yeah, I can’t remember exactly what it sounded like; it’s been years since I did it. But I was thinking about how Jesse sounded to me when he was commentating. I probably added a little more force to it, but the whole vibe I remember was like, ‘Jesus Christ, there’s mayhem everywhere, explosions—it’s chaos!’ I wasn’t trying to sound exactly like him, but he definitely influenced it.
The WWE Hall of Famer admitted he never played the game and couldn’t clearly recall the name of his character, though he thought it might have been Bobby, a commentator role. He also mentioned participating in at least three of the games, possibly including smaller roles or expansions. Despite the gaps in memory, RVD noted that the experience of reading through the dialogue was a lot of fun.
“How it actually came out, I don’t know—I never played the game. I can’t remember. I think my name was Bobby or something. I think I was just a commentator from what I recall, but honestly, Bobby… I can’t remember. I think I was in three of the games, maybe two and a half or something like that. Anyway, it was a lot of fun reading through that dialogue.”
For the record, RVD portrayed the role of Bobby, who was a commentator for one of the important wrestling matches in Saints Row: The Third and he also made an appearance in Saints Row IV as well. Even the likes of Samoa Joe will be appearing in a video game next year, so it’s always a great experience for fans to know their favorite wrestlers are involved in video games, one way or the other.
