WWE Hall of Famer Rob Van Dam dropped some eye-opening revelations about the wrestling industry during his candid appearance on The Dirty Secrets Podcast with Kate Shelor.
The conversation shifted to the homoerotic undertones of wrestling, with Shelor pointing out its historical roots, noting, “Wrestling at its core is a little homoerotic… they used to wrestle naked in the original Olympics, you know, and men are on top of each other.” She then asked RVD if he believed there were many closeted gay wrestlers in the business.
“For sure,” RVD replied without hesitation. “And there are open gay guys that the fans don’t know about, right? Sometimes I’m privy to stuff that never even gets out. You find out some of the stuff by either talking to groupies… you get groupie gossip, and you find out all kinds of things that are going on because they’re part of it.”
RVD went on to share stories about the gossip that circulates behind the scenes, including some surprising revelations he’s heard over the years. “I was married before to an evil ex who would sit with all the other wives, and they would gossip. I’d hear about all kinds of stuff,” he said. “Even Katie [Forbes], like, she knows a person here in Las Vegas that is a transsexual and has all these stories about my friends and peers that, when they’re in town, you know, get with this person.”
The wrestling legend hinted that some of the secrets he’s heard would “shock everybody,” adding, “There’s so many [stories] that I’ve never ever heard of in over 30 years being in the business. It’s amazing. Sometimes I even forget, and Katie will bring it up again, and I’m like, ‘That’s right—he was on the list too.’”
RVD’s unfiltered insights pull back the curtain on an industry that thrives on larger-than-life personas but often hides deeply personal stories behind the scenes. His take on closeted wrestlers and the underground gossip of the wrestling world is bound to stir conversation among fans. Whether you’re shocked, intrigued, or left with more questions, one thing is certain: in wrestling, the drama doesn’t stop when the bell rings.
