Chyna and Triple H were dating in the late 1990s, but things became messy when Triple H started a relationship with Stephanie McMahon while still with Chyna. This led to a lot of drama and eventually, Chyna leaving WWE and now a former WWE employee says they came up with a pitch that led to Triple H and Chyna breaking up.
While speaking on Hannibal TV, Kevin Kelly revealed how he came up with the storyline that affected Triple H and Chyna’s real-life relationship. At the time, Stephanie McMahon was engaged to Test, and their wedding was a big part of WWF’s stories.
Kevin and his wife, who loved soap operas, thought of a dramatic twist. His wife suggested that Triple H should ruin the wedding, marry Stephanie McMahon instead, and create a big shock. Excited by the idea, Kevin fleshed it out with his wife and wrote up an email to pitch the storyline.
The concept was that Stephanie McMahon would somehow get drugged or knocked out, leaving her confused and unaware that she was marrying Triple H instead of Test. The dramatic twist was inspired by an old episode of The Flintstones, where Fred has a nightmare about a wedding at a small church.
In the scene, Vince McMahon would be seen running around, trying to stop the wedding, while the camera reveals a ceremony already underway. The minister pronounces the couple husband and wife, and Stephanie, still dazed, says, “You’ve made me the happiest woman in the world.” When the groom turns around, it’s revealed to be Triple H instead of Test, ending the show on a shocking note.
“It was good to have an open and honest dialogue with Vince, but looking back, it turned out to be one of the biggest mistakes ever, if you think about it. My wife and I are huge soap opera fans, and at the time in WWF, Stephanie was engaged to Test, and they were about to get married.
My wife said, ‘In a soap opera, Triple H would find a way to ruin the wedding, insert himself, and end up married to Stephanie.’ So, the two of us were lying in bed, fleshing out the idea, and suddenly it was like, ‘Oh my God, okay.’
The next day, I went in and wrote up an email. The idea was that somehow, Stephanie gets hit or drugged and becomes loopy, not realizing she’s marrying Triple H. It was inspired by an old Flintstones episode where Fred has a nightmare about a little church. The idea was that Vince would be running around, trying to figure out what was happening.
The camera would burst into the scene, revealing a wedding already in progress. We’d see a long-haired blonde guy and Stephanie in her bridal gown, with the minister saying, ‘I now pronounce you man and wife.’ Stephanie, still dazed, would say, ‘You’ve made me the happiest woman in the world.’ Then, the groom—who we think is Test—turns around, and it’s Triple H. He’d smirk and say, ‘You have no idea how happy you just made me.’ That’s how the show would end.
I also wrote how Stephanie would make her comeback afterward, throwing everyone out of her life and becoming this strong, standalone woman—classic soap opera stuff.“
Kevin Kelly sent the idea to Vince McMahon, Shane McMahon, and others. Vince McMahon loved it and replied with excitement, while Shane McMahon came to Kevin’s office to say how much he liked it too. The creative team changed some details, but they used the main idea.
What Kevin Kelly didn’t know was how real-life relationships would be affected. Triple H and Stephanie McMahon started dating for real, leading to the end of Triple H’s relationship with Chyna. The story also gave Stephanie and Triple H more influence in WWE, changing the company in ways Kevin never expected. He reflected on how one idea, inspired by soap operas, ended up shaping WWE and real lives.
“What actually happened, though, was different. Triple H and Stephanie fell in love for real. Chyna got her heart broken for real. The business took a major turn as Stephanie gained more power in WWF, eventually heading the writing team, and Triple H got more influence too. It ended up being more impactful than the original idea, but they did it their way.
Vince’s response to my email was immediate. I had copied Vince, Shane, Kevin Dunn, Jim Ross, and others, as I had done with 20 or 30 other ideas before. Vince was the first to reply, and his email, in all caps, just said, ‘THAT’S GREAT S—!’
Shane, who was in charge of creative at the time and working just down the hall, came into my office. He poked his head in and said, ‘Dude, that idea is sick. I love it.’ They ended up tweaking it, but the core idea stayed the same.
Little did I know, though, that messing with real relationships would have such an impact. I didn’t know it would break up Triple H and Chyna in real life or that one of the biggest stories in WWF history would affect the industry so much. And yet, here we are. Triple H and Stephanie are still together today, with three kids, and it all started because my wife and I love soap operas.”
Chyna will forever be remembered as a trailblazer for women’s wrestling in WWE but it is simply a shame how Kevin Kelly’s pitch ended up becoming a major reason why her relationship with Triple H ended, as this is something many fans were not aware about.
