Origins of Trick Williams’ Wrestling Name Unveiled

Trick Williams’ popularity continues to grow, and it’s clear he’s on track to become a major star in professional wrestling. Like many wrestlers, Williams doesn’t use his real name in the ring. In fact, he has now revealed the story behind how he came up with his wrestling name.

While speaking on the No-Contest Wrestling podcast, Trick Williams was asked where his name came from. He noted that his real name, Matrick, was created by combining his parents’ names—Monica and Patrick. While playing sports in college, people started shortening his name to “Trick.”

Though uncommon, the nickname stuck, drawing comparisons to figures like Trick Daddy and the rapper Trick Trick. When he transitioned to wrestling, using “Trick” felt natural, as it was already a part of his identity and fit perfectly with his persona.

“So my government name, the name my momma gave me, Matrick. My mom’s name is Monica, my dad’s name is Patrick. Merged them together, you know, Matrick, which is an uncommon name to most. Playing sports, I was staying at like college, it went from Matrick to you know some people were like ‘Hey yo, Trick!’ You know Trick is an unfamiliar name in the community. We know Trick Daddy, we know Trick Trick battle rapper. There’s a few Tricks running around. So when it came to wrestling, it was a natural transition, you know, already used it so it worked out.”

The current NXT Superstar is already a big deal in the development brand but it’s clear he will eventually go on to the main roster and take the world by storm there as well. In the meantime, Williams will continue to hone his skills and “Whoop That Trick” as much as possible.
