Bobby Lashley, the powerhouse and former two-time WWE Champion, recently made waves by debuting in AEW at Dynamite Fright Night on October 30, officially reigniting his partnership with Shelton Benjamin and MVP as The Hurt Syndicate. Now, he’s pulling back the curtain on the key conversation that helped him decide to jump to Tony Khan’s promotion.
In an interview with Chris Van Vliet on Insight, Lashley revealed he sought advice from a surprising source—former AEW manager Dan Lambert. Lambert, a well-known figure from his time managing American Top Team in AEW, gave Lashley an insider’s perspective on the company and its head, Tony Khan.
“I have a good friend that was working with AEW before—Dan Lambert,” Lashley shared. “Dan’s one of my favorite people in this world. He managed me through fighting, has always been just a great friend, first and foremost. I asked him about Tony [Khan] because I didn’t know him.”
According to Lashley, Lambert didn’t sugarcoat his advice, offering both the pros and cons of AEW. But it was the positives that left a lasting impression. “He told me [Tony’s] got kind of like a little personality like you, in a sense, where he goes out of his way to be nice to people he really likes. He’s a genuine person,” Lashley explained.
Inspired by Lambert’s insights, Lashley reconnected with MVP and Shelton Benjamin to form The Hurt Syndicate, making AEW the perfect stage for their resurgence. “We were like, ‘Let’s run this back. Let’s do it.’ We were all out [of WWE] at the time, so let’s see if we can go and do this the right way,” Lashley said.
Lashley’s gamble on AEW has already paid off. Since his debut, he’s defeated Swerve Strickland at Full Gear and is now eyeing AEW’s top championship heading into 2025. Meanwhile, Lambert, who exited AEW in 2022 after managing names like Scorpio Sky and Ethan Page, remains a significant influence in Lashley’s journey.
