Bobby Lashley is a legitimate fighter who has competed in several MMA bouts during his time in combat sports. Although he never worked with the UFC, he has now revealed just how close he came to joining the organization.
While speaking to Chris Van Vliet, Bobby Lashley was asked how close he was to joining the UFC. The Almighty revealed that early in his career, there were some talks with UFC, who were willing to give him a shot if he worked his way up. However, Lashley had a tough decision to make. Other organizations offered him more money, but he always felt his true place was in WWE, even though he needed a break from it at the time.
“At the beginning when I first started fighting, I think there were little talks about it. They said ‘Yeah we’ll give him the opportunity to, but he needs to work his way up.’ I was just like ‘Okay.’ I had a decision to make because one I could fight for other organizations that were offering more money and I always thought if the situation changes in WWE, I thought that’s my calling, that’s where I really deserved to be and I just needed time away because of the situation that was going on. So I didn’t really want to lock up a contract with them since I would have to shut off wrestling.”
When Bobby Lashley was asked whether the UFC contacted him again after he became an established fighter, Lashley revealed that they did contact him. He revealed that UFC contacted him while he was working at TNA Wrestling. Lashley made it clear he didn’t want to give up pro wrestling, so when Bellator said he could continue wrestling while fighting, he chose to go with them instead.
“Yes, but it was always when I did that, I was with Impact – TNA at the time. I was like I don’t wanna give up pro wrestling, that was the biggest thing. Then I talked to Bellator and they were like ‘We’ll let you pro wrestle’ and I was like ‘Done.’‘
Bobby Lashley made his mixed martial arts debut in 2008 and went on to achieve an impressive record of 15 wins out of 17 fights, establishing himself as a strong presence in the octagon, but UFC simply wasn’t meant for him. That being said, Tony Khan has given Lashley his blessings to compete in MMA again, so fans are excited to see if The Almighty will decide to step back into the Octagon somewhere down the line.
