Drew McIntyre shocked fans with his unexpected return on the December 2 episode of Monday Night RAW, storming back into action by attacking Sami Zayn after the main event. While many believed McIntyre’s comeback would coincide with WWE’s holiday live events or the RAW Netflix debut in January 2025, Triple H shed light on why the former WWE Champion came back early.
Speaking to Sports Illustrated at a Netflix media event, Triple H revealed McIntyre’s eagerness to get back in the ring. “He was dying to come back,” Triple H said. “He wasn’t hurt, he wasn’t injured. Let’s just give you a little breather here for a second. And whether that’s spending some time at home enjoying your family, whatever that is, or whether that’s, hey, I have this other project I wanna work on. I have this project that Netflix has come up with, I’m gonna work on that.”
McIntyre’s absence followed his brutal Hell in a Cell loss to CM Punk at WWE Bad Blood, which had left fans speculating about his status with the company. According to Triple H, McIntyre’s time away wasn’t about recovery but rather a strategic breather. “Us having that ability to morph and shift things around and keep things fresh, I think is a tremendous opportunity for us,” Triple H explained.
The timing of McIntyre’s return was reportedly influenced by Bronson Reed’s injury at Survivor Series, which created an opening for McIntyre’s storyline. McIntyre himself addressed the speculation about his absence with a fiery Twitter post, writing, “If you don’t hear it from me, live on WWE TV, or on my social channels, assume that every single thing you hear about Drew McIntyre is BS! Oh, and how soon, you all forget.”
With his return now in motion and holiday week live events confirmed, the question remains how WWE will maximize McIntyre’s momentum heading into 2025, especially as RAW prepares for its Netflix debut.
