The Undertaker remains a legend in professional wrestling, known for his old-school approach to storytelling and how WWE handles booking storylines. The WWE Hall of Famer knows the value of properly told stories and that’s why he has now shared some insights into how WWE plans long-term storylines.
While speaking on the Six Feet Under podcast, The Undertaker shared insights into WWE’s approach to booking long-term storylines and promos. He explained that when creating programs, WWE books backwards. The process starts with figuring out where they want to be at major events like WrestleMania and who they want to face. From there, they work backwards to design the path that leads to those matchups or scenarios.
“With promos, when you book your programs, that’s how they do it. You book backwards. You figure out, ‘Alright, where do I want to be at WrestleMania? Who do I want to face?’ Then you book backwards to figure out how you’re going to get to those two people, or whatever the scenario is, at WrestleMania.”
The Deadman noted that everything is planned from the end to the beginning, making sure everything leads up to the final event. The Undertaker talked about how they also plan the promos carefully, working back to the start.
“You have to lay it all out from the front to the end, and that includes figuring out how you’re going to get to the end, which is WrestleMania. I went over that promo and everything, all the way backwards.”
The Phenom added that when working backwards, they focus on what they want to achieve with the promo, like creating a big moment or tagline to grab the audience’s attention. The goal is to keep the audience interested, even through commercials or until the next week’s show.
“When you talk about working backwards, it’s about figuring out what you want to accomplish, right? What’s the tagline going to be? What’s going to set this promo off? That’s what you’re looking for.
The front of it will figure itself out, but the main goal is to make sure that when we go off the air or go to break, we want people’s attention. We want them to stay tuned through the commercial or until next week, or whatever it’s going to be.”
WWE’s secret to success lies in its focus on long-term storytelling, which keeps fans engaged week after week as they build toward a major Premium Live Event. Therefore, The Undertaker sharing such insights into this booking strategy is an eye-opening moment for many fans.
