Layla, who was with WWE from 2006 to 2015 and played a major role in several storylines, became a household name due to her partnership with Michelle McCool. Interestingly enough, has now revealed CM Punk’s involvement in the formation of the iconic tag team.
While speaking on the No Name Wrestling Podcast, Layla talked about how LayCool came together, explaining that it wasn’t the original plan. Layla revealed that the idea was initially for Michelle McCool to team up with Alicia Fox.
Layla noted that she was supposed to be a temporary addition to the storyline, with the plan being to keep Michelle and Mickie James apart until their scheduled pay-per-view matches. However, the chemistry between Michelle and Layla was so strong that they ended up becoming a successful tag team.
Layla admitted she didn’t understand why it worked, but it did, and it became a big success. Layla then revealed that CM Punk was the one who came up with the LayCool name in the first place.
“LayCool wasn’t actually supposed to happen. It wasn’t supposed to be LayCool because I was on RAW and I got drafted to SmackDown where Michelle was and originally, Stephanie McMahon wanted to do a ‘Mean girls’ storyline. She wanted two girls, mean girls, and it was going to be I think Michelle McCool and Alicia Fox originally. So, I was just a filler. I was just supposed to be going out there just to do whatever and stuff like that but the chemistry between Michelle and I just kept growing and growing and even then, it still wasn’t an idea. It just kept going and going and in the end, we just became a tag team. It just worked. I don’t understand it, it just worked.
CM Punk was actually the one who helped us come up with the name backstage. We were trying to figure out a name and they were like, ‘You need a name, you need a name’ and then he was the one who actually wrote it down and said, ‘Do this’ and we were like ‘Yeah we love that. Let’s do that.'”
For the record, Layla made it clear that she is open to returning to WWE and reuniting with Michelle McCool. Therefore, fans will simply need to wait and see if LayCool will make their shocking return in the future, as the Royal Rumble would be a good place for them to have a reunion.
