Roman Reigns is rewriting the rulebook for wrestling personas. Despite a triumphant return at SummerSlam 2024 and his apparent shift toward being a fan favorite, Reigns insists he’s neither a traditional heel nor a face.
In a candid interview with Sports Illustrated, Reigns opened up about his approach to his character and whether he’s ready to embrace a specific role if he regains the WWE Championship from Cody Rhodes. His answer was as bold as his in-ring persona: “I don’t care.”
Reigns delved into his philosophy, explaining how he respects wrestling’s classic good-vs-evil dynamic but isn’t confined by it. “I respect the template we come from, for the artform’s sake. When you start drawing, you need colors and you have to define a few things. We went black and white, good vs. evil, and that gives you your starting point,” he shared.
However, Reigns made it clear that sticking to the core of his Tribal Chief persona is what drives him. “It took me 39 years to GPS this skin that I wear when I go out there as a performer. That’s why it is important to stick to those guns and not try to be something you’re not.”
The Head of the Table isn’t ignoring the audience’s response, though. “You hear the crowd and take into account what they’re doing. That’s why I refer to it as a babyface reaction, but if I want to turn them on a dime, I can do it,” Reigns noted, highlighting his ability to manipulate reactions through his demeanor rather than traditional storytelling tactics.
Reigns continues to lead The OG Bloodline and recently teamed with CM Punk in a jaw-dropping WarGames match at WWE Survivor Series. Whether fans cheer or jeer, one thing is clear: Roman Reigns isn’t following the script—he’s writing his own.
