Stevie Richards had a memorable career in pro wrestling, working in promotions such as ECW, WWE and then TNA Wrestling. He had worked with Ric Flair during his time in TNA Wrestling and has now revealed the time Flair once disrespected him backstage.
While speaking on The Stevie Richards Show, Stevie Richards revealed a story about Ric Flair disrespecting him backstage during their time in TNA. While Richards praised Flair’s wrestling skills, he admitted that Flair’s behavior outside the ring could be difficult, describing him as someone who can be either very friendly or very disrespectful.
“Ric Flair is someone we’ve talked about a lot off-air, but I don’t think we’ve ever really spoken about him on-air. As far as in-ring work, I would wrestle Ric Flair every day of the week. Outside the ring, though, I probably wouldn’t want anything to do with him. It really depends on which Ric Flair you’re getting. Ric can be an A or a D—there’s no middle ground with him. I’ve been around him when he treated me like we were best friends, like we were in the A category. And then, I’ve been around him when he made me feel completely small.”
Richards recalled an incident at the DoubleTree hotel when he and AJ Styles returned from dinner. Flair was at the bar with Dixie Carter, Kazarian, Bobby Roode, and others. As Richards and Styles walked by, Flair loudly mocked Richards, calling him a “jobber” and telling Styles to leave him and hang out with the “real stars.”
Flair repeated the comments multiple times, and the bar including Dixie Carter laughed along. Richards said he felt humiliated and angry, calling it one of the most disrespectful moments of his career. Although AJ Styles tried to calm him down, Richards admitted he considered confronting Flair but decided against it.
“There was this one time at the DoubleTree hotel. I hate telling this story, but it’s something people bring up anyway. So, AJ Styles and I had just come back from eating, and we were about to head up to our rooms. Ric was at the bar with Dixie Carter and a whole group, including Kazarian and Bobby Roode. As we’re walking by, Ric yells out, ‘Hey, AJ! Ditch that jobber and come hang out with the big stars!’ He said it more than once, loud enough for everyone in the bar to hear.
AJ looked at me, clearly uncomfortable, but Ric kept going, calling me a loser and saying, ‘We’re the stars, not him.’ The whole bar, including Dixie, laughed, and no one stopped him. I felt so humiliated and angry, like the smallest person in the room. I’m not a tough guy, but in that moment, I wanted to knock Ric out. AJ tried to calm me down, saying, ‘Don’t worry about it; he’s just drunk.’ But the damage was done. I’ve never felt so disrespected, and I’ve been through a lot in this business.”
The next day, Flair acted as if nothing had happened, greeting Richards politely. Richards went along with it but later regretted not standing up for himself.
“The next day, Ric acted like nothing had happened. He came up to me all polite, shaking my hand, and I went along with it, but deep down, I regretted not telling him off.
Richards said he used the experience as motivation during their cage match at Bound for Glory. In the match, he mocked Flair’s famous strut to annoy him. While Richards respects Flair’s wrestling legacy, he pointed out that Flair has a reputation for disrespecting others and burning bridges, even with people like Triple H, Shawn Michaels, and Tony Khan. Richard claimed that Flair often insults people when things don’t go his way, but then acts as if nothing happened.
“Later, when we had our cage match at Bound for Glory in Daytona Beach, I made sure to get some payback in my own way. During the match, I mimicked Ric’s strut right in Kazarian’s face, and Ric was legitimately pissed off. It felt good to turn the tables, even if just a little.
The thing with Ric is, he’s burned bridges with almost everyone—Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Tony Khan, you name it. If things don’t go his way, he cuts people down and acts like it’s no big deal. That’s just who he is.“
Stevie Richards was clearly upset by Ric Flair’s disrespect, and fans can see why he felt that way. Many people likely agree with Richards’ perspective on Flair, and that opinion isn’t likely to change anytime soon.
