Hornswoggle was behind many memorable moments in WWE during the late 2000s, and he’s always had great stories to share about his time there. Hornswoggle has now recalled the time a chicken attacked him under the ring during a match.
While speaking on the Six Feet Under podcast, Hornswoggle shared a funny but scary story from a house show when a chicken attacked him under the ring. He explained that he doesn’t like birds because they can be dangerous with their sharp talons, and he especially dislikes chickens. He said chickens are awful because they carry diseases and are just horrible animals.
“Birds? I don’t like them. They’re dangerous, they’ve got talons. Chickens? They suck. I’ve heard you’re not a big fan of chickens either. They’re awful. They carry so many diseases. They’re just horrible animals, horrible animals.”
During a WWE tour, Hornswoggle was getting ready for his match, which wasn’t going to happen for a few hours. While he was changing under the ring, just wearing his gear pants, he suddenly saw the ring skirt move. Hornswoggle thought it was strange and wondered if someone had thrown something under there. To his surprise, it turned out to be a live chicken.
Hornswoggle admitted he really doesn’t like birds, and having a chicken under the ring made him nervous. Above him, Drew McIntyre and Chris Masters were wrestling, but Hornswoggle had to deal with the chicken that was getting wild and attacking him.
“I was with one of the security guards on tour—like, all tour, all tour. He got fed up with it, and finally, we’re in this arena. I don’t even know why there were chickens there. I still don’t know. But there were chickens outside the arena, just roaming around. I’m under the ring, and above me in the ring are Drew McIntyre and Chris Masters. I’m changing because my match isn’t probably until three or four more hours. I’m shirtless, I have my gear pants on, but I’m half-naked. Suddenly, I see the ring skirt move up.”
I’m thinking, ‘What the heck?’ That’s weird. Maybe someone threw something under there. Oh, they did, and it was a live chicken. I don’t like birds. I really don’t. In the middle of a match, Drew is up there saying how loud it is above me, and now they’re putting a live animal underneath the ring. Great, just great.”
Hornswoggle stated that he grabbed a kendo stick to protect himself, and he could see people taking pictures and videos of him in the chaos. The former WWE star told the people watching that he was not supposed to come out but didn’t care, he wasn’t going to let the chicken attack him any longer.
As the chicken kept getting pushed back under the ring, Hornswoggle spent what felt like forever running from it. In reality, it was only a minute, but he was terrified. Hornswoggle then added just how much he hates birds, especially chickens. He couldn’t believe that a chicken was trying to attack him under a wrestling ring.
“Now, this chicken’s going crazy. There’s a kendo stick right there, so I grab it. I see camera flashes—people are taking photos and video of me under the ring with this scared chicken. I said to them, ‘Guys, I’m not supposed to come out, but I’m going to. I don’t care about the show. I’m not getting attacked by this chicken. It’s not happening. I value my life too much!’ I’m swinging at this rooster.
The chicken would go out, but they’d kick it back under the ring, which just pissed it off even more. Drew McIntyre gets on the mic in the middle of the match and says, ‘I think there’s a chicken under the ring.’ Sure enough, the chicken gets kicked out again, and then pushed back under. It seemed like 30 minutes of me running from this chicken, but it was probably just a minute. I was so scared.
I hate birds. I hate them. They’re just not fun. A chicken can talon me! I mean, how many people can say they were attacked by a chicken underneath a wrestling ring? I was petrified—petrified!”
Hornswoggle’s story is a reminder that anything can happen in the world of professional wrestling and that includes a vicious chicken attack. As for Hornswoggle now, he is currently signed to a Legends deal with WWE and he couldn’t be happier about that decision. Fans are now waiting to see if he will ever make another appearance on WWE television again.
