Bryan Danielson’s full-time wrestling career officially ended at AEW WrestleDream, where he dropped the AEW World Title to Jon Moxley. But even as he steps away, the former champ is facing a serious battle outside the ring—ongoing neck issues that require surgery.
Speaking to his wife Brie Garcia on the Nikki & Brie Show, Danielson revealed the toll his career has taken and shared insight into his next steps.
“I was very cautious to not say ‘retirement,’ except for the match where if I lost [against Swerve Strickland], I would retire,” Danielson said. “After that, it was all, ‘the end of my full-time wrestling career.’ We don’t know what’s going to happen with my neck, but it honestly feels like I have a bobblehead.”
Brie confirmed her husband’s need for surgery, adding weight to concerns about his long-term health.
Danielson, known for his relentless dedication to the ring, admitted that stepping away isn’t easy. Reflecting on his first forced retirement due to injuries, he shared, “I didn’t want to retire, but they wouldn’t let me wrestle again. What I found is people are sad for a bit. Then, everybody just moves on, and it doesn’t matter. The hardest part for it is probably for the person who does it.”
While Danielson has traded the adrenaline and unpredictability of the ring for a quieter life, he confessed it’s been an adjustment. “I can’t find the excitement and nervousness of wrestling, where something could go wrong at any moment, in everyday life. But I can find more contentment and peace.”
With his health in focus, it’s unclear when—or if—Danielson will return to the ring. For now, fans can only hope his recovery brings him the strength and clarity to decide what’s next.
