AEW has changed a lot in the last five years, but one ongoing challenge has been booking large venues that often remain largely empty, and this hasn’t helped the company at all. Tony Khan is well aware of this issue and has now explained AEW’s plan to use smaller venues for upcoming shows.
One of the main concerns raised by critics is AEW’s use of larger arenas for their shows, which led to unflattering appearances and exposed attendance issues. In fact, even the likes of Matt Hardy have urged AEW to book smaller venues to help the company.
While speaking during the AEW Full Gear media call, AEW President Tony Khan was asked about AEW running smaller venues for some upcoming shows. Khan stated the crowd in Cedar Park, Texas, created an amazing atmosphere. He wants to find more venues that can bring the same energy and excitement. Khan hopes future shows will have the same great vibe as the one in Austin.
According to Fightful Select, AEW doesn’t choose smaller venues for a few reasons. They consider things like venue amenities, how easy it is to get to, parking availability, and whether they can add more seats if needed. They also think about how well their mailing lists work and whether there will be enough concession staff at the event.
It was also reported by Bryan Alvarez on Wrestling Observer Live that certain logistical issues have prevented AEW from running shows in smaller venues. Considering AEW’s current state of attendance, fans feel the sooner AEW manages to book shows in smaller venues, the better.
