Kenny Omega is ready to step back into the spotlight, but there’s one major catch—he’s not medically cleared to wrestle yet.
The AEW star hasn’t competed since December 2023 due to a diagnosis of diverticulitis that led to surgery, but fans won’t have to wait much longer for his return. At NJPW’s Power Struggle event earlier this month, Omega laid the groundwork for a blockbuster match against Gabe Kidd at Wrestle Dynasty on January 5.
The drama began when Omega surprised the crowd with an in-ring promo, addressing his uncertain timeline for a return. In a classic mic-drop moment, he teased, “How about January 5th?” The tease became reality later that night when Kidd interrupted Omega, sparking a heated brawl that set the stage for their Tokyo Dome clash.
Omega later confirmed the match during an NJPW interview, while also being candid about his medical status. “I’ve had time to reflect after Power Struggle, and I feel I would regret not being able to make things right,” Omega shared. “I would hate for this situation to cause a rift between AEW and New Japan Pro-Wrestling. So after conversations I’ve had with President Tanahashi and other executives in NJPW, I’ve decided that if New Japan requests it, if Gabe requests it, and if the fans want it, then I will wrestle Gabe Kidd, as a professional at Wrestle Dynasty January 5.”
The stakes couldn’t be higher for Omega, who’s known for his unmatched performances but faces the challenge of stepping back into the ring after a significant health setback. Wrestle Dynasty will feature a star-studded lineup, with talent from NJPW, AEW, Stardom, CMLL, and ROH all coming together for an unforgettable night.
