Bobby Lashley departed WWE earlier this year and fans were convinced he was going to join AEW, which is exactly what happened. In light of his current AEW run, he has now revealed how his deal came together.
As seen during the October 30th edition of AEW Dynamite, Bobby Lashley made his debut as he utterly destroyed Swerve Strickland and instantly made fans realize just how dominant he would be in the company.
While speaking on The Lame Guys podcast, Bobby Lashley explained how his AEW deal came together and what helped him decide to sign with the company. One big reason was Tony Khan giving him the freedom to do other things. This meant he could take on another fight, like boxing, bare-knuckle, or MMA, if he wanted. He also liked having time to focus on his personal projects, like the one he recently released called Phenom to Legend.
“I think part of it was because Tony told me I’d have the opportunity to do other things. So, if I really want to tackle another fight—whether it’s boxing, bare-knuckle, or MMA—I think he’ll give me the chance to do that. Plus, I can work on other projects I’ve been involved in. I just put one out recently, Phenom to Legend. That flexibility was part of the decision.”
Lashley also thought a lot about the Hurt Business and what more they could have done, even imagining a new version called the Hurt Syndicate. Lashley felt like he didn’t get to finish things the way he wanted in WWE, like putting over younger stars and having good rivalries with them.
Another thing that made him happy was the idea of teaming up with MVP and Shelton Benjamin again. Lashley believes their group is great for the company because they help build up other talent. He said that feuding with them is a real challenge.
“But then I started thinking about the Hurt Business and what we could have done with it. The idea of a Hurt Syndicate came to mind, and I thought, ‘Man, if I’m going to go out, there are certain ways I want to do it.’ I didn’t get the chance to go out the way I wanted, by putting over certain guys and having feuds with them.
Another option that makes me happy is the possibility of working with MVP and Shelton again. To run with that and just have fun because, ultimately, we’re a group that’s great for the company. Like I’ve said before, we have the ability to build talent. If you go into a feud with us, you’re on the mic with MVP, in the ring with Shelton, with me, and whoever else we bring in. There’s a lot of obstacles.”
Bobby Lashley is set to square off against Swerve Strickland at AEW Full Gear on November 23rd and fans are excited to see how Lashley will fare in the highly anticipated match. Fans feel Lashley made the right decision to join AEW, so now we’ll have to see if he will find success in Tony Khan’s company.
