Bobby Lashley has found himself at the center of online controversy following his October interview on The Lame Guys podcast, where he floated a provocative storyline idea for a feud with WWE’s Gunther. The comments, which hinted at “toeing the line” with racial undertones, sparked significant backlash. Now, Lashley is clearing the air.
During the interview, Lashley shared his vision for a storyline involving his former Hurt Business faction confronting Gunther. “I wanted Gunther to say, ‘People like you don’t deserve a chance at my title,’” Lashley explained.
“People would have been like, ‘What did he say?’ We didn’t have to go there, but we could toe the line. I think it could have been a huge feud.” Lashley even joked about invoking a controversial mustache gesture to add fuel to the storyline.
The fallout was swift, with fans taking to social media to criticize the idea as racially insensitive. Lashley returned to The Lame Guys for a follow-up interview, where he addressed the backlash head-on, blaming “dirtsheets” for blowing his comments out of proportion. “I guess I took a little heat because some people were taking some of the things I said as, ‘He’s trying to do a racial thing,’” Lashley said.
He went on to clarify, “By all means, I am not racist towards any particular group. I don’t know why people ran with it. It’s unfortunate we have these dirtsheets trying to pull out clickbait and spew drama online.”
He continued, “For those people, just stay away from me. I’m just not that guy spreading it. There are some guys that want that out, and they sit and have beef and battles with each other. For me, I’m very confident in what I am and what I can do and what I have going forward. I’m not that guy. They can stay offline and leave my interviews unheard. I’m not that guy to spew any hate. I didn’t like how it ran. Some people came to me and were like, ‘Ah man, that would have been cool.’ Others were like, ‘Ah man he….’ I saw one post, ‘Bobby really has CTE right now. He’s losing his mind.’ Is that where it’s gone?”
Lashley isn’t letting the chatter slow him down as he gears up for his showdown with Swerve Strickland at AEW Full Gear. Whether fans agree or not, it’s clear Bobby isn’t afraid to push boundaries and keep it real in and out of the ring.
