WWE likes to shock their fans whenever possible, and a great way to keep them on the edge of their seats is to execute moves on people who are thought to be off limits. This is why Randy Orton hitting Nick Aldis with an RKO sent shockwaves throughout the fan base. There is an interesting story to that as well.

Since taking the position as the blue brand’s General Manager on the October 13, 2023, episode of SmackDown, Nick Aldis has certainly done a lot to shake up the blue brand. He hasn’t wrestled a match, but that doesn’t mean he’s off limits in terms of physicality.

While speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Nick Aldis brought up that surprising RKO in Brooklyn. He stated that Triple H likes to drop hints about possible storyline directions that he could take later, and this was certainly an unexpected one. In fact, that RKO was not part of the original plan at all.

“Randy Orton RKO’ed me out of the blue the last time we were in Brooklyn. A week later, he cuts me a check and says, ‘That’s for next time.’ We haven’t gone back to it, thankfully. But, I think that Hunter likes playing with things like that. Laying breadcrumbs or planting a seed, or whatever, and that’s how I look as me and Adam [Pearce] like there’s always potential there.”

“It’s 2024, so I still feel funny about giving you this information, but whatever. [The RKO], it was called on the fly. It was totally an audible.”

When asked how the segment was supposed to end, Nick Aldis replied that Randy Orton was going to sign the SmackDown contract anyway, and then “stare down with Roman and that was it. Then someone told someone [about the RKO].”

Nick Aldis said that he was at ringside when he was told about the RKO, so he had to get in the ring and call the move to Randy Orton during the segment, which the Apex Predator obliged. In the end, they created an unforgettable moment that shocked many fans, even if they haven’t revisited that idea. That being said, WWE RAW General Manager Adam Pearce also took an RKO in recent memory.

We will have to see if Nick Alids ever gets in the ring for an actual WWE match. He didn’t shut down that possibility, but at this point he is living week to week in WWE while enjoying a dream job as SmackDown General Manager.
