WWE has their own vision for talent, and sometimes they can surprise fans with those decisions. Nick Aldis entered the picture on SmackDown as the brand’s General Manager during the October 13, 2023, episode of WWE SmackDown, and he hasn’t looked back.
Nick Aldis had a historic career in the pro wrestling world, including notable runs as NWA World Heavyweight Champion, before WWE finally brought him in. However, they didn’t offer him a role as an active Superstar. Instead, he was given a different role entirely, one he knew he could kill. At first, Aldis worked as a producer backstage for a couple of months, but he soon moved on to a new on-screen role.
While speaking to Chris Van Vliet on Insight, Nick Aldis broke down Mickie James’ reaction to WWE signing him on as SmackDown General Manager. She was totally supportive of her husband’s new role in WWE, which was a good thing because he had already taken the gig.
“When the General Manager thing was offered to me, I talked to Mickie [James] about it. I said they’re offering me the General Manager of SmackDown. She said, ‘100%, you’ll kill that.’ I said ‘good, cause I already accepted it.’ I just said ‘I’m gonna be the best f*cking General Manager you’ve ever seen,’ you know, and we’ll go from there.”
Nick Aldis and Mickie James married in December 2015 and have a son, Donovan Patrick Aldis, who was born in 2014. They continue to support each other professionally, even when working for different companies.
Mickie James has a long history with WWE, one that ended with her belongings being shipped back to her in a trash bag. She posted a photo of that garbage bag, and it spawned quite a reaction from fans online who felt she deserved better treatment. In the end, Mark Carrano was fired over that incident.
We will have to see if Nick Aldis ever steps in the ring for WWE, which is a possibility he addressed. Only time will tell what is next for him, but he’s not the only former NWA World Heavyweight Champion in an authority figure role for WWE, because Adam Pearce has the same notch in his belt over on the RAW side.
