Olympic gold medalist and two-time NCAA wrestling champion Gable Steveson will return to the University of Minnesota wrestling team for a fifth season. This was not a hard decision for him to make, and he seems happy to be back.
Gable Steveson will use an NCAA waiver for extra eligibility due to an Olympic redshirt and a COVID-19 extension. Steveson has an 85-2 collegiate record and a 52-match winning streak. He is one of the university’s most successful athletes, so his return was met with a lot of fanfare.
Gable Steveson was asked why he made a decision to return as a Golden Gopher. The Olympian said that the decision was an easy one, and he went on to expand on that statement.
“Oh, It was just an easy decision you know um I’ve been in Minnesota my whole life ever since I was 11 years old I started in Apple Valley Minnesota; not a hard one to come back probably the greatest place on Earth you could be. I’m honored to wrestle with this guy next time we’ve been at for a long time — too long. Having those guys look out for me while I was in the WWE and NFL and even wrestling here over that course of time period too is an honor, so I’m happy to be back.”
Gable Steveson was released from WWE, and his NFL career with the Buffalo Bills didn’t go anywhere. Steveson was also asked about what went wrong with his WWE and NFL stints. He was clear about the fact that he had never played football before, but he also didn’t close the door on another try on the gridiron or WWE down the line.
Now, Steveson has returned to the University of Minnesota, which has to make them very happy. This is evident by the fact that it seems that Steveson was welcomed back with open arms.
We will have to see what Gable Steveson is able to do next. He will be wrestling for a fifth year at the University of Minnesota, but he can’t stay in college forever. If anything, he will certainly garner attention wherever he lands next.
