Many WWE fans will remember Mitch the plant fondly. There were even miniature Mitch ceramic planters that were sold with WWE branding after Chris Jericho and Jon Moxley made a plant famous. It turns out that plant had an interesting backstory.
Chris Jericho recently shared the origin story of Mitch the Potted Plant, a surprising legend in professional wrestling. WWE fans may have missed this detail, but Mitch’s demise remains a memorable moment.
In 2016, Jericho and Jon Moxley, who was known as Dean Ambrose at the time in WWE, got into an interesting storyline. This rivalry led to the Ambrose Asylum Match at WWE Extreme Rules.
During the angle, Jon Moxley replaced Jericho’s Highlight Reel talk show with his own “Ambrose Asylum” segments. The set included only a hand-drawn sign and a potted plant, but that plant gained an unexpected legacy.
Chris Jericho smashed Mitch the Plant over Moxley’s head, and this was a dramatic moment because Mitch had his own fans at that point. On his Talk is Jericho podcast, Jericho revealed how the plant came to be part of the story.
“The reason that started is because we were in Tampa and I was having Mox on the Highlight Reel. Mox was like, ‘I think I should bring you a gift or something. Maybe like a flower or a plant?’ We went to the offices of the Tampa Bay Lightning arena and there was like a potted plant. We look both ways and just take it. ‘We’ll bring it back after.’”
Chris Jericho admitted they never returned the plant, cementing Mitch’s place in pro wrestling lore. Both Jericho and Jon Moxley now wrestle for AEW, but Mitch hasn’t made a return to the situation.
Jon Moxley is currently the AEW World Champion as the first-ever four-time champion. He is set to defend it against Orange Cassidy at AEW Full Gear on November 23.
Chris Jericho, on the other hand, is currently the ROH World Champion. We will have to see if Moxley and Jericho ever collide again, but if that happens, then we’ll be looking at a possible champion vs champion situation.
