Jim Johnston remains one of the most iconic music composers in pro wrestling history but he was fired by WWE back in 2017, shocking fans. He keeps up with the current music in pro wrestling and it appears he has criticized the same.

The pro wrestling world is constantly evolving and something that used to be accepted in the past, might no longer be seen the same way now. The same can be said when it comes to pro wrestlers in general. A wrestler’s entrance theme is undoubtedly one of the most important aspects of their overall presentation. A weak entrance theme would only do more disservice to the wrestler than anything else.

While speaking in an interview with Hannibal TV, Jim Johnston talked about the music in modern-day pro wrestling. Jim Johnston shares his disappointment with the current state of music in pro wrestling, saying it lacks the heart and excitement it used to have. He believes that the right music can make a huge difference, turning something that seems empty into something powerful and full of feeling. However, he feels that today’s wrestling music all sounds the same, with no real story or connection to the characters. Instead, it’s just loud and packed with sound effects.

Johnston thinks this problem is largely due to big corporations that focus too much on making money. These companies sign long-term deals, so they’re more interested in just producing content than making it good. He notices this is an issue in many big companies, where the people in charge don’t seem to use the products they’re selling.

As a result, customers get frustrated with things like hard-to-open packages or missing instructions. Johnston remembers when companies cared more about making high-quality products, and he believes that real leadership is needed to bring that back. He thinks newer companies, trying to prove themselves, understand that they need to make the best products and create the best experience for customers—values that large companies often lose sight of.

“You have to find the right music, but once you do, it’s like, ‘Wow!’ Suddenly, something you thought had no heart and soul turns out to have tons of it. But somehow, the whole business has lost track of that. All the music sounds the same; it doesn’t tell a story, it doesn’t brand a character. It’s just loud and busy with lots of sound effects, and I don’t understand why.

I think, sadly, it’s due to big corporations and too much money. They cut these huge contracts that last for years, so everything’s guaranteed. There’s less incentive to innovate, and more incentive to just deliver the show than to make the product great. It seems to happen all the time. Corporations get really big, and I hear from a lot of people the same basic complaint: ‘There’s no way the CEO of this company actually uses this product.’ Because if he did, he’d fire twenty people after spending twenty minutes just trying to open the package. Are you kidding me?

You open it up, and there are no instructions included, no batteries—how is that possible? What are we doing here? We used to be a great company. Sadly, unless there’s real, unbelievable leadership at the top, it just seems to happen as part of the whole corporate cycle. When they’re hungry and just starting, they know that the only way to break through is to have the best product and the best customer experience…”

There are many fans who would agree with what Jim Johnston said as there is certainly a lack of depth and variety in music nowadays and we hope someday, music will go back to how it was once in the business.
