Baron Corbin is shedding light on the behind-the-scenes creation of his well-known ‘King Corbin’ persona and why it didn’t last as long as planned.
During a recent conversation with Sports Illustrated, the former WWE star revealed that the gimmick was the brainchild of legendary manager and creative mind Paul Heyman.
“I think the pandemic killed the King because that was one of those things that needed to be in front of people,” Corbin shared, explaining why the character had a shorter run than anticipated.
The presentation was key to the character’s success, he noted, emphasizing its extravagant nature. “It was all about the presentation from being carried to the ring to the obnoxious giant 8,000 lbs. fur coat, and the crown, and all those things.”
Corbin reminisced about the unique interaction the character had with live crowds and how pivotal their reactions were. “That’s something that needs to be presented to a live audience because it lives better that way, where it irritates people. When I’m looking down on them and waving at them from my giant throne that I’m being carried on, it just has more of an effect that way,” he added.
Unfortunately, the onset of the pandemic in 2020 meant empty arenas and a lack of live reactions—factors that ultimately impacted the lifespan of ‘King Corbin.’ Without the energy and responses of a live crowd, the character struggled to resonate the way Corbin and Heyman envisioned.
Baron Corbin recently ended his tenure with WWE after being with the company for over a decade, starting in 2012. His departure came when he was informed that his contract would not be renewed.
Ringside News wishes Baron Corbin the best as he moves forward in his career.
