Grayson Waller is quickly becoming one of WWE’s most exciting superstars, famous for his constant talking and confidence in the ring. He and Austin Theory have teamed up regularly, but Waller recently admitted he didn’t think their partnership had any long-term plans.
During the April 19 episode of WWE SmackDown, Grayson Waller and Austin Theory were honored with the new WWE Tag Team Championship following their victory at WrestleMania 40 for the SmackDown Tag Team Championship. They would eventually drop the titles and despite their ups and downs, the team has remained one of SmackDown’s highlights.
While speaking to Chris Van Vliet, Grayson Waller talked about his tag team with Austin Theory and how they got together. They didn’t know each other very well, but they got along right away. They had similar views on the business and worked together on a few things. Waller realized they both wanted to be great and were willing to work hard to make it happen.
As they worked together more and traveled together, they started having the same schedule. They would wake up early to go to the gym and do the things that come with their lifestyle. Waller said their similar mindsets made everything work easily. Waller admitted that he didn’t think it was going to be a long-term thing, but it worked so well that it just stuck.
“Me and Theory, we didn’t really know each other well—we’d met a few times before I got called up. But we just got along really well right from the start. We have similar mindsets when it comes to the business. We did a few little things together, and I was like, ‘We’re both here to be great, and we’re not going to let anyone get in our way. We’re going to work hard for it too.’
So, we started working together a bit, then we started traveling more, and we had the same schedule. Like, ‘Hey, we’ve got to wake up early because we’ve got to get to the gym,’—all those types of things. We have similar mindsets, and it just kind of worked. I don’t think it was ever a long-term plan, but it’s one of those things that just worked so well that it stuck.“
Looking back, Waller couldn’t remember exactly how it all started because it happened so quickly. He thinks it started when he got involved in something Theory was doing, probably with Kevin Owens, since Owens liked to stun them both. What began as Waller helping Theory for a week turned into Theory helping him, and before they knew it, they were a team. It all came together fast.
“I can’t even remember how it all started; it’s gone by so fast. I think it was something like, I was just getting involved in something he was involved with, probably with Kevin Owens—because that guy loves stunning us! But it started small, with me helping him out one week, then him helping me out, and it just kept happening. Then, all of a sudden, we were a team. So, it all came together really quickly.”
It was also reported by WrestleVotes that WWE has no plans to split up Austin Theory and Grayson Waller anytime soon. Regardless, the dynamic duo continue to be highlights of SmackDown’s tag team division and fans wouldn’t really have it any other way.
