Michael Cole has had many unique moments in his long WWE career and has earned a lot of respect for his dedication and years of service. However, he was just as shocked as everyone else when The Undertaker’s streak ended, as he didn’t know it would happen.
The Undertaker’s legendary undefeated streak at WrestleMania started in 1991 when he defeated Jimmy Snuka. As the years went by, his wins over major stars like Jake Roberts, Sid, and Ric Flair added to the importance of The Streak, making it as significant as the World Championship match at WrestleMania. However, The Streak came to an end at WrestleMania 30 when Brock Lesnar defeated The Undertaker, a decision that still doesn’t sit well with many people.
While speaking on Backstage Pass, JBL revealed that neither he nor Michael Cole knew the outcome of The Undertaker’s match against Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 30. Both assumed that The Undertaker would win, so when Lesnar pinned him, they were caught completely off guard. Michael Cole, expecting the streak to continue, started to announce it that way, but quickly corrected himself mid-sentence when he realized the streak had actually ended.
“That night, Michael Cole and I, neither one of us got a finish for Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker. I just assumed the Undertaker was going to win, and so did Michael. When Brock pins the Undertaker, Michael Cole says something to the effect of, ‘And the streak…’ He was going to say continues, is what he was going to say. Then we saw the three and Michael said, ‘has ended.’ He just looked at me, like, ‘What the f***. Oh my God.'”
Both JBL and Cole were shocked as they looked around, taking in the stunned reactions of the fans. JBL noted that sometimes a reaction is even more genuine and impactful when the outcome is a complete surprise.
“And all of a sudden we realize the streak has ended, then we saw the reaction and the crowd. Sometimes your reaction is so much better when you don’t know what’s out there.”
Even Jim Ross previously stated that The Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak should have continued. Regardless, The Undertaker’s streak ending will forever go down as one of the most divisive decisions in professional wrestling history and Michael Cole’s genuine shock truly added to the moment.
