Damian Priest, one of WWE’s rising stars known for his commanding presence, has been fortunate enough to receive valuable guidance from one of wrestling’s most revered icons, The Undertaker.
During a recent appearance on Conversations with The Wrestling Classic, Priest shared what it’s been like to learn from the WWE legend and the impact it has had on his career.
“If he’s there at an event, I’ll sit down next to him, or stand next to him and just, you know, like, ‘You have anything for me?’ Then, he’ll give it to me, and he’ll give it to me straight,” Priest explained. “There’s not one piece more important than the other. I think the main thing, my favorite thing about every piece of advice that he gives me [is that] he’s straight with me, even if it’s something that you don’t necessarily want to hear, but he’s not going to sugarcoat anything, and I appreciate that, because that’s the only way I’m actually going to get better or just achieve something else.”
Priest highlighted how The Undertaker’s honesty has pushed him to improve. “I don’t need pats on the back. I don’t need, ‘Good jobs.’ I need, ‘Okay, it’s fine. But if you would have did this this way, or think about it like this, or be careful about this.’”
The most significant piece of wisdom Priest has absorbed from The Undertaker is the timeless lesson of authenticity.
“The most important piece of advice is basically, ‘Be yourself, turn up the volume,’ like we’ve all heard different people say that in some way, in different interviews,” Priest said. “But hearing that from him, firsthand… just simplifying things, of who I am and how to present myself and what not to do. You don’t have to beg the crowd for acceptance. Just be you and they’ll either follow or they won’t, but don’t beg for it.”
Priest emphasized how grateful he is for The Undertaker’s mentorship and insights. “Just a lot of different things that he’s just so good at articulating. I’m very appreciative that I have The Undertaker giving me advice and explaining to me how I should carry myself and how to be a WWE Superstar, leader, and all of it. He’s been good to me in that sense. I’m forever grateful.”
With the influence of The Undertaker shaping his path, Damian Priest is poised to carve out a legacy in WWE that honors the lessons passed down from one of the greatest.
