Bret Hart has long harbored deep resentment towards Bill Goldberg for the infamous career-ending kick delivered at Starrcade 1999. The wrestling icon continues to voice his grievances against his former rival and other names in the business, including Eric Bischoff. In fact, Eric Bischoff has now expressed his disappointment at Bret Hart for being bitter and burying people.
Earlier this year, WWE Hall of Famers and veterans opened up about their experiences and frustrations from their time in WCW, featured in the VICE docuseries Who Killed WCW? Bret Hart in particular has shared strong feelings of resentment toward WCW, speaking openly about the issues he faced there and he even blamed Eric Bischoff for issues there.
While speaking on his 83 Weeks podcast, Eric Bischoff was asked about his current relationship with Bret Hart. Eric Bischoff said that although he and Bret Hart have made peace, they will never be close friends. He pointed out that while they have some things in common outside of wrestling, it’s a shame they can’t be better friends.
“You know, Bret and I have certainly reconciled, but we’re never going to be friends—and that’s cool. It’s unfortunate, though, because there are a lot of things I actually like about Bret. We have a lot in common, believe it or not, outside of wrestling.”
Bischoff respects Bret but often feels sorry for him because of how negative he seems. He said Bret always has someone to criticize or blame, and that negativity seems heavy. Bischoff explained that carrying around that kind of anger or sadness would be hard for him. If he felt that way all the time, he wouldn’t want to talk about it; he’d rather talk about something more positive, like his dog. However, he knows Bret Hart has to live with his own choices. Bischoff still thinks Bret comes across as very dark, but believes perhaps Hart is happy that way.
“I respect Bret, and I feel disappointed for him because he’s just so dark. There’s always somebody he’s got to bury, hate, accuse, or criticize. For me, carrying all that around every single day, or every time somebody puts a microphone in my face, would be really depressing. It’d be heavy, and I wouldn’t want to do it. If it made me that angry or that down, I wouldn’t want to talk about it. I’d rather talk about my dog.
But hey, that’s Bret. He’s got to live in his own skin. Maybe he’s happy, maybe he likes being that way—I don’t know. But he just seems very… dark to me.”
Nevertheless, Bret Hart will always feel bitter about his time in WCW, and fans can understand why. However, many people believe that Bret should let go of the hate and resentment he still holds.
