Releases are a normal part of a professional wrestler’s career, and WWE is no different, but some fans have noticed how they might have changed the way releases are being perceived by the media. We now have clarification regarding how WWE communities such releases to the media.
Baron Corbin, Indi Hartwell, and Tegan Nox were recently reported to have been released by WWE. For Corbin, WWE decided not to renew his contract, meaning he’ll become a free agent once it officially ends. These releases surprised fans, and for good reason, as these were unexpected names to see let go after remaining with the company for so many years.
While speaking on Fightful Select’s Q&A podcast, Sean Ross Sapp was asked whether WWE had softened its approach to announcing releases to the media. Sapp stated that he hadn’t noticed any direct change in how WWE handles it. He clarified that the term “departures” was simply a choice his team made, not WWE’s wording.
They used it because they were still confirming whether Tegan Nox and Indi Hartwell were actually released or if their contracts were expiring. He added that Triple H had shown concern over wording differences earlier this year, so they wanted to be careful.
“I know that had been reported elsewhere, but I’ve never been given any real insight or indication on how the releases themselves go. There was a lot of misinformation about why we used the term “departures.” It was our phrasing, not WWE’s. We were still working to find out if Tegan Nox and Indi Hartwell were released or had their contracts set to expire. Clearly Triple H took issue with the difference in terminology earlier this year. We wanted to be sure.
We have also reported that there isn’t any possibility of WWE releasing more talent anytime soon following their recent series of cuts. Regardless, WWE will continue to handle releases the way they see fit and that’s unlikely to change anytime soon.
Do you believe that WWE should focus on building their underutilized talent more instead of releasing them? Let us know in the comments section below!
