Chris Jericho has truly done it all when it comes to being a professional wrestler and his love for AEW can’t ever be doubted. He ended up winning the ROH World Championship recently, and now we have a clarification regarding the reason behind his title win.
Chris Jericho won the Ring of Honor World Championship for the second time during the October 23rd edition of AEW Dynamite, beating Mark Briscoe in a ladder match with help from The Learning Tree. As expected, this move saw a ton of backlash from fans as well.
While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer talked about Chris Jericho’s recent title win, claiming that it could be tied to AEW’s efforts to secure a TV deal for Ring of Honor. Meltzer suggested that having a high-profile wrestler like Jericho as ROH champion might boost AEW’s negotiations for a TV deal.
“I think that if they are working on an ROH television deal, then it probably is beneficial for them to be champion, to try and close that deal.”
Sean Ross Sapp provided clarification on Meltzer’s report during Fightful Select’s Q&A podcast, where he made it clear he doubts that making Chris Jericho champion would help ROH get a TV deal. He respects Jericho, but he thinks it’s unrealistic for a network in 2024 or 2025 to base a decision on who holds the title. He added it’s unlikely a network would suddenly approve a deal just because Jericho is champion.
“I can’t imagine how they would think that would garner a TV deal in the year 2024/2025. All due respect to Chris Jericho, we just think that some television station is going be like, “Oh wait, Jericho is champ? sh*t! Well in that case…” No.”
We will have to wait and see whether AEW has any long-term plans for Chris Jericho as the ROH World Champion, as it’s been made abundantly clear that his title win has nothing to do with Tony Khan trying to secure a television deal for ROH.
