The Undertaker is a legend in pro wrestling, having entertained fans for more than 30 years. While he has long since retired, he still keeps an eye on what’s happening in wrestling today. That’s why it comes as no surprise that he isn’t a fan of those who break kayfabe on social media.
Last month, the WWE Hall of Famer made headlines for criticizing modern-day professional wrestlers for not having pride in the business. He didn’t just stop at that, as The Deadman also criticized current day wrestlers for their in-ring abilities and stated how there isn’t storytelling in the ring anymore.
While speaking on his Six Feet Under podcast, The Undertaker talked about wrestlers who act differently on social media than they do in the ring, thereby breaking character. He finds it frustrating when wrestlers build a serious character but then act silly online, making it hard for fans to believe in them and then criticized them for the same. He tells wrestlers to stay focused on their character, especially when they’re still building their career, because this is their job and they should treat it seriously.
“There is a huge disconnect for me. Even being in the business, there’s so much — and I try to tell guys this all the time. Like, ‘You’re trying to be this character, you’re trying to be this individual. And then you go and go on social media, and you’re bouncing around acting like an idiot.’ I was just like, ‘How is anybody supposed to take you seriously? This is what pays the bill. This is what you are. This is what you are trying to be. And you’re not there yet.’”
The Undertaker also believes many pro wrestlers nowadays are fixated on light tubes. Nevertheless, many fans will likely agree with what The Deadman had to say, as it simply feels far too jarring when a wrestler breaks character on social media and displays mannerisms that are the exact opposite of their gimmick. Therefore, we’ll have to wait and see if such pro wrestlers will pay heed to The Phenom’s criticism.
