Jeff Hardy made his return to TNA earlier this year and he has reminded people why he is one of the most beloved wrestlers in the history of the business. He began his career at a very young age and has now revealed why he was banned from doing sports during his senior year in high school.
Jeff Hardy is widely considered one of the most skilled wrestlers of his generation. Known for his charisma and daring, high-risk moves, he’s built a huge fan base over the years. While injuries and personal struggles have limited his ring time lately, Hardy has still managed to keep his wrestling career going.
While speaking to 105.1 The Bounce Detroit, Jeff Hardy explains why he couldn’t play sports during his senior year of high school. He wanted everyone to watch him on live TV, where he would get beaten up in wrestling. The athletic director at his school asked if he was making money from wrestling. Hardy said they got paid a little, but a big fee was taken out, so he only ended up with about $50 after each match.
The athletic director told him that because he was making money, he couldn’t play school sports. He compared it to someone in the NFL trying to play high school football, saying it was very different. Due to this, Hardy did enhancement matches but didn’t play any sports that year as he was banned. In the end, he was happy because pro wrestling worked out well for him.
“I don’t know if it made me the man, but I made sure to tell everybody, ‘Man, y’all gotta watch me get my ass kicked Monday night on live TV.’ Then the athletic director at our high school asked, ‘Jeffrey, are you making any money from these wrestling matches?’ I said, ‘Yeah, they pay us a little bit, but the guy takes a big booking fee. We just come out with about 50 bucks after one match.’ He said, ‘Well, if that’s the case, you can’t wrestle for us. That’d be like you going to play for the NFL and then trying to play football for us.’ I told him, ‘It’s a little different. Actually, it’s a lot different.’ So yeah, I ended up doing enhancement matches, but I didn’t play any sports my senior year. But the pro wrestling worked out, yeah.”
As for Jeff Hardy now, he and his brother Matt Hardy won the TNA Tag Team Championships at the TNA Bound for Glory pay-per-view, so it’s safe to say his current run in TNA has been going well so far.
