Dustin Rhodes is known as a veteran in professional wrestling, with decades of experience in the business. Over the years, he has seen many wrestling companies succeed and fail while overcoming numerous challenges himself. In fact, Cody Rhodes has addressed and clarified a long-standing rumor about his brother.
Dustin Rhodes made his professional wrestling debut on September 13, 1988, with the Tampa-based Championship Wrestling From Florida promotion. His journey led him to WWE, where he gained fame as Goldust, pushing boundaries and making tons of contributions to the industry. Throughout his career, Rhodes has received immense respect for his pioneering work and enduring impact as Goldust.
While speaking on the Flagrant podcast, Cody Rhodes talked about the rumor that Dustin Rhodes was given the Goldust character because of a family rivalry between the Rhodes and Vince McMahon, notably because Dusty Rhodes was a big name in WCW and NWA.
Cody Rhodes doesn’t think there’s much truth to this story. He acknowledged that the families might not have gotten along, but he hasn’t seen any real rivalry himself because he was too young at the time. He thinks there might have been some disagreements between Vince and his father since Dusty Rhodes wanted to do his own thing and go back to Florida to run Jim Crockett Promotions, which was a competing company. Therefore, Cody Rhodes believes that any rivalry didn’t really affect him.
“I think Dustin got a lot of good experience out of it. I think the rumor was that Vince was upset with your dad or something, so he gave him this rough character. That’s always the story, so there’s no truth there. The families didn’t like each other, but I think it’s a good story. It’s helped me, you know? Maybe there’s some truth here and there, but I never experienced it much. I was too young. I think maybe Vince and my dad had some back and forth just because my dad went on and did his own thing. He wanted to go back to Florida and run Jim Crockett Promotions, which was the rival promotion. So yeah, I don’t know if there was a rivalry that existed; it really didn’t come down to me.”
In fact, Cody Rhodes believes that Goldust deserves to be in the WWE Hall of Fame. Nevertheless, The American Nightmare felt he had to make it clear that Goldust character was not given because of a family feud and laid that rumor to rest once and for all.
