Vince McMahon made a lot of big business moves during the decades that he ran the company. One of his last great acquisitions involved getting Cody Rhodes back, as he welcomed the American Nightmare home. That also came with quite a price tag.
2022 marked a pivotal year for Cody Rhodes as he left AEW, where he served as an EVP, to take another chance on his career. Fans waited eagerly to see if his “Kingdom” entrance would play out at WrestleMania 38 as Seth Rollins waited in the ring.
In an interview with the Flagrant podcast, Cody Rhodes shared that Vince McMahon learned that his departure from AEW was real and not just a storyline for television. McMahon wanted to confirm this to avoid any issues with contract tampering or interference.
Once McMahon was sure that Rhodes’ exit from AEW was genuine, he made an offer. That number was also an incredibly large one.
“It was really old-school, [Vince McMahon] just scribbled on a piece of paper the amount of money the contract would be for and just slid it, which was unnecessary. I can’t tell you how much it was, but I can tell you it was 15 times what I was making in WWE the first run. It was a different layer with all that I had done.”
Vince McMahon didn’t need to put on the theatrics with sliding a number across the table to Cody Rhodes, but that was just a move McMahon wanted to pull off. In the end, it was also a finishing move for the talks, because they were able to find that number appropriate, meaning that Cody Rhodes 15x his value after betting on himself when he left WWE in 2016.
It’s unknown how much money Vince McMahon actually offered Cody Rhodes that day, but it was obviously a good enough number for them to make a deal. Cody Rhodes has also made a ton of cash for WWE since his return at WrestleMania 38, which had paid off for all parties involved.
Of course, Vince McMahon is no longer with WWE. After Janel Grant’s lawsuit went public, and McMahon was accused of sexual abuse and trafficking, the Chairman of the Board left his spot. Cody Rhodes is still around, and odds are he is still raking in the cash with a lucrative deal.
